Karloo Pools is one of those hikes I keep coming back to. It’s short, steep in sections, and ends at a beautiful waterhole that’s perfect for a dip on a warm day. If you're after a quick nature escape with a bit of a workout and a rewarding dip at the end, this one ticks all the boxes.
Getting There
The best part is how easy it is to get to. You can literally step off the train at Heathcote Station and be on the trail within minutes. The first 500 metres take you through a residential area, then you hit the bush. The official start of the Karloo Track is clearly marked.
The Trail
The track starts off fairly gentle, then gradually gets steeper as you descend. Expect uneven terrain, rocks, tree roots, and a few natural steps — nothing too technical, but you’ll feel it on the way back up. It’s a popular track so it’s pretty well-maintained and easy to follow.
Karloo Pools
Once you arrive, you’ll see why this spot is so loved. Karloo Pools is a big, clear waterhole surrounded by smooth rock platforms and dense bushland. The water is cold year-round and absolutely perfect after the hike in.
Bring a towel, snacks, and something to dry off with if you’re planning to swim. The rocks can get slippery, so take your time getting in.
Best Time to Go
Weekdays or early mornings are your best bet if you want a bit of peace. It can get really busy on weekends, especially in summer.
Final Thoughts
Karloo is one of those tracks that never gets old. I’ve done it as a quick afternoon walk, as training with a loaded pack, or just for a swim and reset. It’s close, easy to access by train, and always feels like a mini adventure.
If you’re looking for a half-day trip with proper bush vibes and a swim at the end, this is one I’d definitely recommend.
