Bundeena to Little Marley

Royal National Park

This coastal walk is one of the most popular tracks in Royal National Park, and for good reason. It’s part of the longer Coast Track, but even this shorter section from Bundeena to Little Marley packs in beautiful views, ocean breeze, and the chance to spot whales if you’re lucky.

The Trail

The track starts from Bundeena and heads south along the coast, with well-maintained paths, boardwalks, and sandstone rock sections. It’s easy to follow and doesn’t have any steep climbs, so it’s perfect if you’re just after something cruisy with a solid 2 to 3 hours of movement.

You’ll pass through bushland and open cliffside with views that just keep getting better. Along the way, you’ll spot Wedding Cake Rock (now fenced off, but still worth seeing), and lookouts like the Balconies and Marley Head.

From June to October, this trail becomes one of the best whale-watching spots in the park. The Balconies Lookout, just a short walk in from the trailhead, is a well-known vantage point where you can often spot humpback whales making their annual migration. You might even catch dolphins cruising the coastline too.

Flexible Route Options

If you don’t feel like heading all the way to Little Marley, another popular option is stopping at Wedding Cake Rock or Big Marley Beach. You can turn back before crossing the beach, or keep going – it’s entirely up to you and how much time and energy you’ve got.

For those wanting more, you can continue past Little Marley and eventually link up with the full Coast Track. Some people even do the full 26 km from Otford to Bundeena, but this shorter section is perfect if you’re after a half-day adventure without the full commitment.

A Few Tips

There are toilets near the trailhead at Bundeena and they’re usually open early, even before sunrise – handy if you’re heading out for golden hour. It gets busy on weekends, especially if it’s hot, so go early or aim for sunset if you prefer fewer people.

This trail is one I keep coming back to. It’s easy, scenic, and super versatile depending on how far you want to go.
