Butterbox & Mount Hay Summit

Blue Mountains National Park

This track takes you to some of the most incredible views in the Blue Mountains, and only requires a 1km hike to get to the point I’m standing in the image. It is track that anybody can do, or must do shall I say! It’s also a surprisingly quiet track, so you can easily spend hours in peace just admiring the views.

You can split the track into two sections. The Butterbox section is 2.5km (1hr return) and if you want to continue and do the Mount Hay Summit, this will be an additional steep 3km hike. Mount Hay is extremely overgrown at the moment and there is no visible mountain view from the top, but you’ll surely get the satisfaction of completing it. Nonetheless, Butterbox alone is surreal. I packed a book, lunch and hot tea over the weekend and spent a good 6 hours at Butterbox Point.

Please note that getting to the carpark requires you to drive on a 12km unsealed road. As of 9 May, the potholes have been fixed and it is possible to take a smaller car, however an SUV would be a better option. The condition of the road often changes after rain so take this into consideration before heading out.
