If you're after a quiet, easy track with big views and barely any crowds, Ikara Head is a solid pick. Tucked away in the Blue Mountains near Mount Victoria, this 7 km return hike is super manageable and perfect if you want something low-key but still scenic. It’s also one of those tracks that you can easily build on , whether that’s exploring nearby caves or linking up with another trail.
The Track
The trail isn’t signposted, but it’s pretty easy to follow. You’ll start from the end of Victoria Falls Road, where you can park at the small dirt clearing. From there, follow the worn-in path straight into bushland. It’s mostly flat with just a few small ups and downs , super doable even if you’re not a regular hiker.
It’s around 3.5 km each way, depending on detours, and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours return with stops.
Highlights
- Ikara Head Lookout: The main lookout gives you sweeping views over the Grose Valley. It’s the kind of spot you’ll want to sit at for a while. Bring snacks.
- Wildflowers: In spring, there are loads of wildflowers along the track.
Optional Detour: Giraween Cave
There’s a short offshoot you can take to Giraween Cave, about 10 minutes off the main path. It’s not a massive cave, but it’s a fun little extra if you want to explore a bit more. The track to the cave isn’t marked either, so it helps to have a map or AllTrails loaded.
Track Tips
- Navigation: The trail is unmarked, so either follow your GPS or download the route beforehand. It’s well-worn, but easy to second-guess at junctions.
- Footwear: Regular runners are fine, but if it’s been raining, it can get a bit muddy.
- Best Time to Go: Early morning or late afternoon for better light and cooler temps. The lookout is west-facing so sunset hits nicely.
Extend Your Hike
If you’re keen to do more, The Ikara Head Track connects with the Asgard Swamp Track, making it easy to turn this into a longer hike if you’re up for it. The Victoria Falls Track is also nearby and offers a more challenging option if you want to explore more of the area.. You could easily turn it into a full day out if you’re up for it.
Final Thoughts
Ikara Head is low effort, high reward. It’s not a hard walk, but you still get those classic Blue Mountains valley views , and without the weekend crowds. Good one to do solo or with a mate, and easy to tack on some extras if you're feeling it.
