Overnight Hike at Bob Turners Track

Wollemi National Park

I recently embarked on my first overnight hike along the Bob Turners Track in Wollemi National Park, NSW. Covering an 8km return with a 350m elevation gain, the trail was divided into two 4km days, presenting a balanced challenge that was ideal for my first experience with a heavier pack. The descent through the bushland led to a stunning sandy beach at the Colo River, framed by towering eucalypts, and opened up to a beautiful swimming spot near a creek, perfect for sourcing clean water (filtered, of course!).

The trail begins with a gradual yet steep descent through the bush, winding down from structured pathways to a more natural dirt path scattered with rocky patches. This continues throughout, offering areas with gentle slopes and flat stretches that provide some respite amidst the steep terrain. Although some sections of the trail have overgrown plants and loose soil, it is generally well-maintained and easy to navigate. The return journey involves numerous stairs, making the ascent challenging but rewarding.

Upon reaching the river, the environment transforms into a secluded haven, perfect for camping and swimming. The beach area, flanked by gum trees, provides a wild and remote atmosphere, making it an excellent spot for relaxation and reflection. The river water is clear, varying in depth, and ideal for swimming, with sections deep enough for a proper dip and shallower areas for cooling off.

Throughout this hike, I tested my overnight hiking gear for the first time, from the effectiveness of my sleeping bag's temperature rating to my tent's resilience against the elements. The ample flat sandbanks along the river offered numerous options for setting up camp, great for either an overnight stay or a leisurely swim and rest during a day walk.

Bob Turners Track is not only an incredible overnight hiking route but also a perfect day hike option for those looking to explore the natural beauty of the Colo River area without committing to an overnight stay. Please note that there are no facilities along this trail, so it’s important to follow leave-no-trace principles to preserve the beauty of the environment.

My experience here was absolutely rewarding—a definite 10/10 recommendation for anyone interested in exploring this captivating area.

Note: The last 3km to the parking area follows a fire trail with significant bumps and uneven sections. While a small car might manage at a very slow pace, a vehicle with higher clearance is recommended, especially in wet conditions, to navigate this stretch more comfortably.
